Raising the handlebars on your bicycle may be a necessity to make sure that you are comfortable while riding your bike. Your handlebars should be at a level comfortable and suitable for the type of riding you prefer, be it on a road or mountain bike and be it racing or cruising. Leaning too far forward when riding a bicycle places stress on your wrists, arms, neck and back, so adjusting your handlebars to the correct level will help you avoid pain and ride more comfortably.
Step 1
Loosen the bolt on the center of the handlebars with the correct size Allen wrench. Do not remove the bolt completely, just loosen it so that you will be able to slide the handlebars up and down.
Step 2
Tap the bottom of the handlebars gently with a rubber mallet if the handlebars stick so they will move up.
Step 3
Twist the handlebars gently and raise them independent of the bicycle frame to a height that feels comfortable. Be mindful of the line on the stem that says "Minimum Insert" as this is the minimum length of the stem that needs to sit in the frame to keep the handlebars in place.
Step 4
Straighten the handlebars so they run perpendicular to the frame of the bike and tighten the bolt on top with the Allen wrench.
