Summer Day Camps in Aurora, Colorado, for Kids With Special Needs

Most children love going away to summer camps because of the fun of participating in their many activities. However, the average summer camp can be demanding for children who have special needs. Socializing with other kids or taking part in events may be at the edge of their abilities. However, some summer camps cater only to children with special needs, enabling enable them to have fun without becoming stressed out. There are several of these camps in the Aurora-Denver region.

Camps Near Aurora

Adam's Camp has its headquarters in Centennial, just a few miles from Aurora. The organization caters for children with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, genetic syndromes or chromosomal disorders that affect mobility, language, learning and daily living.

Village Rocky Mountain Village, in the town of Empire, is regarded as one of the top Easter Seals camps in the country. The organization has been helping children with disabilities and special needs, and their families, for more than 80 years.

The Learning Camp, located in Vail, is for children with learning disabilities such as ADHD and dyslexia. The Learning Camp's sports camps help children with these disabilities to take part in group sports such as football, baseball and soccer.

Adam's Camp: Early Start Therapy

Early Start is an intensive, multi-discipline therapy program offered by Adam's Camp's Denver location. It is a day camp for children ages one to four who have developmental delays due to autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. In the program each child receives one-on-one physical, occupational, music and speech therapy daily. The program is ideal for newly diagnosed infants and toddlers and for children preparing for preschool.

Adam"s Camp: Pathfinder and Trailblazer Therapy

Two therapy programs are offered by Adam"s Camp in the picturesque Colorado Mountains. While the prime focus is on therapy for the child, families are also an important element of the programs. The camp is ideal for parents who want and need a break in a relaxed setting, but also want to spend quality time with their child. Pathfinder Therapy is for the four to eight age group, and Trailblazer for the eight to twelve age group.

Warm Water Therapy

Easter Seals has a Warm Water Therapy pool in Lakewood, Colorado, for children with disabilities and also for older people with problems. The buoyancy of water enables individuals to carry out exercises in water that are difficult to do on land. The benefits of this therapy purportedly include a decrease in pain, improvement and maintenance of the body's fitness, better joint mobility, muscle flexibility and strength and an improvement in circulation and respiration.

Adventure Therapy

The Learning Camp is dedicated to providing traditional summer camp adventures for boys and girls age seven to 14 with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalcula, processing disorders, NLD and ADHD or ADD. "Adventure therapy" is combined with carefully planned academic programs. The adventures include swimming, horseback riding, rock climbing, rafting and canoeing on the Colorado River, archery backpacking, camping, caving and fishing. In addition children get to enjoy arts and crafts, camp fires and camp skits, softball, soccer and several other fun pastimes.
