The theory behind colon cleansing is that toxins build up in the digestive track and may affect overall health. Proponents of cleansing believe that these toxins may be responsible for conditions such as arthritis, allergies and asthma. Medically, there is little scientific proof to support this hypothesis. Experts, such as Michael Picco, M.D., from MayoClinic.com, explain that the body has its own way of eliminating waste material and cleansing is unnecessary. You may find drinking peppermint tea when colon cleansing may provide other benefits as well.

Indigestion

University of Maryland Medical Center reports that peppermint found in some colon cleansing teas may calm the muscles of the stomach and help the body to digest fats. Peppermint works to improve the flow of bile and allow food to pass quickly. By relaxing the muscles that control intestinal movement, peppermint tea might help alleviate cramping associated with gas and bloating plus sooth indigestion.

Expectorant

The peppermint oil found in colon cleansing teas will also work as a decongestant and expectorant for those with excess phlegm from a cold or flu. University of Maryland Medical Center states that peppermint contains menthol which helps the thin mucus. When suffering from a cold or the flu, mucus may thicken and build up in the respiratory tract. As you cough, this thick mucus irritates bronchial tubes and the throat. The natural decongestant in peppermint will help break down mucus and thin it. Drinking peppermint tea may make coughing more productive and reduce the irritation.

Analgesic

A study from Phytotherapy Research in 2003 reports that peppermint brewed in tea may have an analgesic effect on the nervous system. Peppermint oil works to relax the systems of the body and provide a smoothing feeling to relieve pain and tension. Drinking a cup of peppermint tea for colon cleansing may also help sooth stress and relieve tension. In addition, this report suggests that drinking tea containing peppermint may have antimicrobial and antiviral effects to help boost the immune system. There is a limit to the studies available regarding peppermint leaves and more research is necessary to prove this theory.
