How to Adjust a Loose Belt on a Treadmill

Treadmills are popular indoor exercise equipment, found in both gyms and homes. Treadmills simulate the experience of running while keeping you stationary, allowing you to watch television, keep an eye on your children or just avoid the weather while getting your daily exercise in. Over time, the treadmill belt will become loose and require tightening. Most treadmills are made so that this can be done reasonably easily.

Step 1

Unplug the treadmill from its power source.

Step 2

Use a wrench to remove the bolts holding down the flywheel cover. This is usually on the right side of the treadmill at the front, close to where the motor is. Remove the flywheel cover.

Step 3

Find the treadmill belt tension screws. These will be on the pulley, roller or other device on which the belt moves.

Step 4

Use a screwdriver to tighten the belt by turning the tension screws three-quarters of a turn to the right. After each turn, pull up on the edge of the belt in the middle of the treadmill platform. Continue tightening the belt until you have 2 to 3 inches of space between the belt and platform when you pull on the belt.

Step 5

Replace the flywheel cover, tightening the bolts, then plug in the treadmill.
