Thought for many years to be one of the easiest and most effective diets around, the Atkins Diet has come under much scrutiny. The Atkins Diet promotes cutting out carbohydrates and replacing them with foods high in saturated fat. Saturated fat consumed in large quantities has been shown to lead to heart disease. The diet drastically contradicts the Food and Drug Administration's food pyramid. When restricting certain food groups such as grains, starches, dairy and sugars, you are also restricting necessary nutrients from the body, which, in turn, can lead to many serious side effects.
Cardiac Problems
According to the American Heart Association, multiple studies have shown a diet high in saturated fats leads to heart disease. In order to have a strong, healthy heart, foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains are vital. The Atkins Diet urges these foods to be limited, and dieters may end up cutting out the foods completely.
Elevated Cholesterol
A diet high in saturated fat raises levels of low-density lipoprotein, known as bad cholesterol. When too much LDL circulates in the blood, it can clog arteries, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke. It is important to keep your high-density lipoprotein, also known as good cholesterol, at a healthy level so it can combat the LDL from clogging your arteries. In order to increase your HDL level, you must exercise and reduce saturated fat in your diet.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle. According to the International Osteoporosis Association, all fad diets should be avoided in order to reduce risk of developing osteoporosis. A high intake of animal protein contributes to calcium being lost in the urine. A well-balanced diet is essential for building healthy bones. The Atkins Diet in phases 1 and 2 completely omits milk, which is a strong source of vitamin D that helps the growth of healthy bones.
Gout
High levels of fat and cholesterol in the blood contribute to the onset of gout. Gout is a complex form of arthritis that usually comes on suddenly. It is characterized by severe pain and redness of the joints. In order to avoid gout, you must limit your consumption of foods high in saturated fat.
Kidney Stones
The American Academy of Family Physicians states high animal protein intake leads to kidney function loss and kidney stones. It recommends reducing high protein intake to avoid recurring kidney stones.
Colon Cancer
The excessive consumption of red meat is associated with increasing your risks of developing colon cancer. All low-carb diets discourage the consumption of dietary fibers that aid in preventing colon cancer. The diets encourage more consumption of red meats, which is strictly against the FDA's daily dietary guidelines.
Constipation
A diet that restricts consumption of fruits and vegetables takes a toll on your digestive system. In order to have a healthy digestive tract, you must eat plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. A diet that reduces carbohydrates commonly causes constipation because of lack of natural fiber in these foods. Chronic constipation can also lead to a higher risk of colon cancer.
