Stanley Burroughs introduced his controversial lemon juice detoxification diet to the world in his book, "The Master Cleanse." The cleanse consists of a 10-day period of fasting on an unusual lemonade concoction. Burroughs promoted the use of his plan to quickly lose weight while detoxifying. Always consult a doctor before making any changes to your diet.
Organic Lemon Juice
Burroughs recommends using the juice of organic lemons in his master cleanse concoction. You should freshly squeeze the lemon juice everyday so that the juice does not lose its enzymes before you consume them. Squeeze the lemons to get about 2 tbsp. of lemon juice for each glass of the lemonade mixture that you will consume. You can make a substitution of limes for lemons.
Organic Grade B Maple Syrup
Burroughs recommends the use of organic grade B maple syrup because of its rich mineral content compared with grade A and C maple syrup. Grade B maple syrup contains potassium, calcium, iron, sodium, magnesium as well as vitamins A, C and B-2. The maple syrup provides a satisfying sweet flavor to the lemonade mixture while providing the body with much needed nutrients during the fast.
Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne pepper is an integral part of the lemonade mixture as it aids in the detoxification of the body. The cayenne pepper helps loosen mucous so that the body can expel it easily, according to Burroughs. Each glass of the lemonade should contain 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper.
Water
You will need 8 oz. of water for each glass of the lemonade mixture. Avoid tap water and use filtered or ionized water. In addition to the lemonade mixture, you can drink as much water as you need throughout the 10-day fast.
Sea Salt
Each morning, you will need to use pure sea salt to make the "Salt Water Flush." You would need to add the salt to a quart of water that you would drink immediately upon rising. This flush stimulates your bowels and aids in bowel elimination.
Laxative Tea
Each evening, Burroughs recommends drinking a cup of laxative tea to aid in elimination. You can purchase laxative tea at most health food stores, and the easiest to find are senna-based.
