The number of calories that you burn on a given day results from your metabolic needs as well as your normal activity level. This value is called your total daily energy expenditure, or TDEE.
Significance
The value of your TDEE represents the amount of calories that you must consume to maintain your body weight. It depends on many factors including your age, weight, height, gender and activity level.
TDEE Calculation
There are both rough and more accurate methods for estimating TDEE. The rough calculation is to multiply your body weight in pounds by 15 or 16 calories to obtain this value. The more accurate way is to calculate your basal metabolic rate, or BMR, and multiply it by a numerical value assigned to your activity level.
Considerations
Both of these methods for calculating TDEE are still estimates. Before significantly changing your daily caloric intake, you should discuss with your physician what an appropriate and healthy TDEE is for you.
