The lymphatic system circulates lymph fluid in all the cells of our bodies, washing and transporting debris out of the cells. When the lymphatic system functions properly, lymph fluid does not remain in the skin. When the system does not work properly in the body, lymphedema, a chronic condition of lymph fluid swelling and inflammation in the skin, occurs.

Significance of Proper Nutrition
Proper nutrition may significantly improve lymphedema symptoms; however, there is no established lymphedema diet. Doctors recommend that patients who have lymphedema drink at least eight glasses of water daily and avoid foods that can lead to weight gain. Studies have linked obesity to increased risk of lymphedema. Lymphedema patients should eat plenty of fiber, including fruits, vegetables and whole grains. A low sodium diet can lessen fluid retention, which can lead to more swelling.
Significance of Exercises
When performed correctly, remedial exercises can mobilize lymph fluid and prevent joint pain and rigidity. Mobilization of lymph fluid decreases swelling. Exercises should be paced and performed to tolerance, without overly tiring a patient.
Types of Exercises
Recommended exercises for leg lymphedema include jumping on a trampoline, running, jogging and bicycling. Exercises for arm lymphedema include yoga, tai chi, boxing and weightlifting. Swimming is another excellent exercise for treatment of lymphedema. Water pressure acts like a compression garment, and can help a patient decrease swelling while she is swimming. A patient with lymphedema can lead an active and healthy life as long as he heeds precautions and safety advice.
Time Frame
Lymphedema treatment is a lifelong process. A patient with lymphedema should exercise and eat healthy meals daily.
Warnings
When exercising, a patient with lymphedema must wear special compression garments to prevent further swelling in the lymphedematous body part. Compression garments provide external pressure that prevents lymph fluid from remaining and accumulating in the skin. Compression garments for the legs include compression stockings, leggings, capris and pants. Compression garments for the arms include compression sleeves, gloves and gauntlets.
The patient should also be careful not to hurt herself when exercising. Injuries and wounds can further disrupt the lymphatic system and increase lymph swelling.
The patient should also avoid extreme dieting: It can harm his health. Consult your doctor if you have questions about your lymphedema.
