Baked apples are a popular treat often enjoyed as a breakfast, a snack or as a dessert. Most recipes for baked apples call for using brown sugar in its preparation, which contribute to its sweet flavor and texture. However, if you are watching your sugar intake, are diabetic, or seeking a healthier way to prepare baked apples, you may want to replace the brown sugar with another flavorful or nutrient-rich ingredient. The refined sugar may be replaced with a sugar substitute, dried fruits, honey, or real maple syrup. By combining these methods, baked apples can be prepared without using brown sugar.

Baked Apples

Step 1

Preheat oven to 375°F. Wash the apples and remove their cores with either a corer or a paring knife. Leave approximately 1/2 inch of the apple near the bottom. Scoop out the seeds and make the holes approximately 3/4 to 1 inch wide.

Step 2

Combine the maple syrup, stevia, cinnamon, raisins, and pecans in a small bowl. Stuff this mixture into each apple, and then place the apples in an 8x8-inch square baking pan. Top with approximately 1/4 of the full tablespoon of butter.

Add the boiling water to the baking pan.

Step 3

Bake at 375 F degrees for approximately 30 to 40 minutes or until tender, but not too soft. Remove pan from the oven and use the juices from the pan to baste the apples.
