Corns are thick layers of skin that form to protect your feet. They occur in areas where your foot continually rubs up against something, such as a shoe, the ground or another toe. While you may not like the look or feel of your corn, the Connecticut Surgical Group points out that they're harmless and don't need to be treated unless they're bothering you. Home treatments are effective in most cases at minimizing or removing them.

Step 1

Fill a basin with very warm, soapy water. Place a towel on the floor to protect it from water damage. Place the basin on top of the towel.

Step 2

Soak your feet in the soapy water for 15 to 20 minutes, or longer if you find it relaxing. Soaking your feet helps soften corns, according to MayoClinic.com.

Step 3

Remove your feet from the soak and use a towel to pat them dry.

Step 4

Rub a pumice stone or a washcloth over your corn to slough away the top layers of skin. Remove only the topmost layer at one time. Removing too much skin can cause irritation and infection.

Step 5

Repeat the treatment daily until you have removed the entire corn.

Tips and Warnings

  • Evaluate your shoes to prevent treated corns from returning, recommends Connecticut Surgical Group. Wear loose shoes or add padding to your shoes in areas that rub against your feet and cause corns. If you do not eliminate the cause of your corns, they are likely to return.
  • To avoid infection, avoid using a pumice stone, and never cut or scrape corns or calluses to speed removal, especially if you are diabetic.

Things You'll Need

  • Basin
  • Soap
  • 2 towels
  • Pumice stone or wash cloth
