Calories in the First Trimester of Pregnancy

Along with eating enough during pregnancy, it's important to eat the right foods. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains is good for the health of you and your baby. During the first few months of pregnancy, women only need to gain about four pounds, according to Ask Dr. Sears.

Calories Needed Early in Pregnancy

The Mayo Clinic advises that an extra 150 to 200 calories per day is all that is needed during the first trimester of pregnancy. In the last two trimesters, that number will go up to about 300 extra calories each day.

Pre-Pregnancy Weight

Although all pregnant women need to gain weight, exactly how much depends on factors such as your weight before getting pregnant and how many fetuses you're carrying. Your doctor will be able to advise you on how much weight gain is right for your situation.

Warning

Unless your doctor specifically recommends it, pregnancy is not a time to diet or cut calories. In the first trimester, you may feel too nauseous to eat much, but try to get in healthy, bland foods when you can. Steamed vegetables, plain whole grain pasta and yogurt are all healthy choices.
