Bowflex workout machines provide a safe weight-training substitute for free weights. Bowflex machines isolate muscle groups. One particular Bowflex machine offers different weightlifting exercises such as the abdominal crunch, a squat station and the bench press. Both Bowflex and free weights have their advantages and disadvantages. Doug Walker, a gym owner, says you need to look for ways to make workouts more difficult to push your body toward better results, according to The Training Station Inc. website.

Significance

Knowing how to train is a big part of your regimen. Bowflex can be used to complement a free-weight workout. If you usually use free weights, a machine workout can provide much-needed variety, which forces your muscles to adapt to a new challenge. Bowflex machines can work the same stabilizer muscles worked by free weights if the band or rod is bent or stretched significantly. This leads to more resistance near the top of the movement, according to the Build Muscle and Gain Weight Fast Guide.

Free Weight Advantages

Free-weight training requires lifting the weight and stabilizing it. For example, if you're performing a bench press, you'll need to balance the bar and keep it steady while concentrating on disciplined form. In squats, to keep from losing your balance and falling down, many muscles in your body are working to keep you balanced. To build as much muscle mass as possible, these stabilizer muscles need a workout as well.

Bowflex Advantages

Bowflex machines can be purchased and placed in your home. You don't need someone to spot you during lifts, which is often required during heavy free-weight sessions. The Bowflex machine with rods is also easily transported around your house and works several major muscle groups.

Disadvantages

Free weights and Bowflex can complement one another, but they also have disadvantages. According to the Body Building Resource website, making a mistake on your form is not difficult with free weights. You cannot be getting maximum benefit if your movements are incorrect and you can also suffer an injury. Trying to lift more weight than you can handle can also cause injury. Bowflex machines can cost $3,000, as of November 2010. The Bodybuildingforyou website explains that machines with rods and bands are more effective for general fitness than building muscle.

Considerations

Choose the type of equipment that works best for you. If you are committed to building muscle, free weights are the better choice. If you're interested in losing weight and are willing to spend the money, the Bowflex machine is a safer, more convenient alternative.
