Dandruff is a scalp condition that occurs due to dry skin, oily skin, fungal infections or improper hygiene. There are two types of dandruff, dry dandruff and waxy dandruff. Waxy dandruff is difficult to treat. Several home remedies can be helpful in removing dandruff permanently without side effects, unlike medical treatments available in the market which use strong chemicals and can worsen the condition of the scalp. It is also important to maintain a healthy diet and drink lots of water to keep the skin hydrated.

Causes

According to Natural Home Remedies, the primary cause of dandruff is poor nutrition. Many people are living a lifestyle where processed and refined food makes up the majority of their meals, which can result in these people suffering from dandruff. A zinc deficiency can also cause dandruff. Other conditions that can result in dandruff include fungal or bacterial infections, for which a doctor is required to prescribe medication to clear up the infection.

Symptoms

If you notice very fine, white flakes on your face, clothes, or skin, it is likely that you are suffering from dandruff. You may also experience itching in the scalp. In rare conditions, dandruff may spread to other parts of the body such as eyebrows and the genital area. This condition is known as seborrhea and requires dermatological treatment. After trying home remedies, if you do not notice any difference, you could have psoriasis of the scalp.

Treatment

Make sure you wash your hair with a mild shampoo, such as a baby shampoo, every two days. This will help in keeping the scalp clean. If the dandruff is severe, you can use an anti-dandruff shampoo. There are several anti-dandruff shampoos to choose from and MayoClinic.com says you may need to try each one until you find the best one for you. You should use this shampoo every day until your dandruff is under control, then reduce the use to only a few times a week.

Diet

It is important to drink at least two liters of water throughout the day. Increase the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables so your body receives all the nutritional supplements it requires. According to MayoClinic.com, a diet with enough vitamin B and zinc may help prevent dandruff.

Home Remedies

According to MayoClinic.com, managing stress helps in preventing dandruff. Home remedies include massaging your scalp with warm olive, almond or coconut oil. Wrap your hair in a hot towel and wash off after 15 minutes. Repeat whenever you want to wash your hair. Or you can try adding a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the shampoo which will also help in reducing dandruff. Another treatment includes applying a paste of fenugreek seeds to the scalp.
