Hints to Quit Smoking

Cigarettes have many different chemicals in them. The most widely known and addictive of these chemicals is nicotine. The effects of this compound can cause you to feel relaxed and alert when you smoke, but it can also increase your chances for lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 21 percent of adults over 18 years of age currently smoke cigarettes. If you fall into this percentile and you are looking to quit, there are several hints that can assist you.

Avoidance

People can have a positive and negative influence on you when you are quitting. Avoid those who can cause you to be nervous and those who currently smoke and may inadvertently tempt you. Surround yourself instead with friends, family members and co-workers that are positive influences and can be there to support you when you are craving a cigarette.

Prevention

If you are trying to quit and you come across a half-empty pack of cigarettes in your glove compartment, you might be tempted to light up and "have just one." Prevent this from happening by going through your clothes, cabinets, drawers and car for any type of smoking paraphernalia that can lead to a relapse. Throw away lighters, cigarettes, ashtrays, matches and anything else involved with your smoking habits.

Stress Relief

Stress is a powerful sensation that can keep you up at night and it can also cause you to light a cigarette for comfort. If you are trying to quit, become more calm by participating in some form of relaxation activity like tai chi, yoga, meditative breathing or muscle relaxation.

Exercise

Exercise brings many benefits to the body such as improved muscle strength, better brain function, increased coordination and stronger bones. When you are trying to quit smoking, it can help you overcome cravings and also keep your mind occupied. Partake in 30 minutes of daily exercise and do something that you enjoy doing such as weightlifting, biking, hiking, running, playing basketball or going for a walk in the park.

Goals

When you decide to quit smoking, you probably have several physical and personal reasons why. Write them down on a piece of paper or small notebook that is easy to carry with you. Every time you get tempted to smoke, pull out your list and remind yourself why it is not a good idea to light up.

Aids

Nicotine replacement aids can be found at your local pharmacy. These are products that contain nicotine and deliver it to your body without having to smoke. You take these over the course of time and progressively reduce the amount of nicotine you are taking in. Your body then becomes less dependent and you are able to overcome your addiction. These come in the form of patches, lozenges and gums.
