Tribulus for the Metabolism & Weight Loss

Tribulus terrestris is an herb also known as cat-head or bindii. Many states consider Triblus a noxious weed. Supplements from the Triblus plant claim to boost energy levels and help men suffering from sexual dysfunction. There have been studies into the affect this supplement has on metabolism and weight loss. Overall, the results have not been positive. You should always talk to your doctor before taking a dietary supplement.

Metabolism

Metabolism is a series of chemical reactions that converts food into energy. Metabolism begins with conception and is a constant process until death. At any given moment, your body could have thousands of metabolic reactions going on. Some individuals want to make a correlation between weight and metabolism. While technically there is a connection, when it comes to weight loss only two things matter: calories and physical activity.

Weight Loss

There is no magic pill for weight loss. No supplement will sufficiently boost your metabolism to the point that you have a noticeable drop in pounds. Weight loss comes from counting calories and getting some exercise. The best plan to lose weight requires a change in diet and lifestyle. Reducing your diet by 500 calories a day will allow you to lose 1 lb. a week. If you factor a fitness routine into that equation, you may boost the weight loss. Herbal supplements, such as Triblus, cannot do what you ultimately need -- burn more calories than you eat.

Studies

In 2000, the University of Nebraska conducted a study on the effects of Tribulus terrestris on body composition and exercise performance. The research took into account the body weight, dietary state and mood of the subjects at the beginning of the trial. Researchers also measured composition and maximal strength. The conclusion was that the supplement did not help the test subjects increase their strength or change their body composition. A similar test it 2007 by Southern Cross University Lismore had the same results. Medical science has not proven the effectiveness of Tribulus on either metabolism or weight loss.

Benefits

Manufacturers of herbal supplements claim that products containing Tribulus will increase strength and boost energy. There is no evidence to support this claim. In 2001, The National Hospital in Singapore did a study on Tribulus and found supplements did increase an antigen that improves sexual function in rats. Human trials have not confirmed this works for people as well.

Considerations

There are no reported side effects for dietary supplements containing Tribulus. Any supplement may interfere with the absorption of prescription medications. Always consult your doctor before beginning a supplement program. If you want to lose weight, the best way is the old-fashioned way: Cut back on calories and get some exercise every day.
