Foods That Trigger Menopausal Hot Flashes

Many women dread the thought of menopause and its accompanying symptoms. According to MayoClinic.com, approximately three out of four women experience hot flashes during menopause. Hot flashes are characterized by a feeling of intense heat, usually radiating from the back, neck or face. Some women find that certain foods and drinks spark this flushed feeling.

Spicy Foods

Some women find that spicy foods trigger hot flashes. Avoid foods with chili, cayenne, ginger or pepper if you notice hot flashes after consuming spicy food.

Hot Foods

Foods heated to high temperatures can trigger hot flashes, according to Dr. Christiane Northrup, a medical doctor who specializes in managing menopause. Hot beverages, soups, stews and casseroles should be considered as possible triggers.

Alcohol

MayoClinic.com lists wine and other alcoholic beverages as potential triggers. Replacing alcohol with whole fruit juices may help reduce hot flashes.

White Sugar

Some women find that white sugar triggers hot flashes. It may help to replace white sugar with honey, agave nectar or raw sugar.
