A sprain is an injury to a ligament that is overextended and as a result is stretched in excess, ruptured or torn. Torn ligaments require immobilization or even surgery. A stretched ligament can be healed over time with the aid of several remedies. One such remedy is castor oil. Castor oil is derived from the castor bean and is used to treat a variety of ailments, including swelling and pain.
Step 1
Run tap water until it gets very hot, then fill and seal the water bottle. If tap water doesn't reach the desired temperature, heat the water on the stove. Do not use boiling water as it can burn the skin.
Step 2
Fold several pieces of cotton or wool flannelette into a pad large enough to cover the affected area. Dip the cloth into a container of castor oil, fully submerging it.
Step 3
Place the pad on the affected area and secure it with several layers of plastic wrap.
Step 4
Place the hot water bottle on the affected area for around an hour a day until swelling and pain disappear.
