An itchy scalp tends to be dry and flaky as well, and this is most often the result of a scalp condition like dandruff. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, an itchy scalp can plague people, and you can treat it by keeping your scalp moisturized and using products to stop the dandruff. But some oil-based products can clog your hair follicles and lead to an infection, as well as possibly produce more dandruff. Use the proper combination of over-the-counter products to soothe your itchy scalp and keep flaking and irritation at bay.
Step 1
Wash your hair daily with a shampoo designed to treat dandruff. Essence recommends using an over-the-counter product that contains salicylic acid to help get rid of the dead skin and buildup that can clog your follicles and lead to itching and flaking. Rub the product into your wet scalp and through your hair. Allow it to stay on for two minutes, then rinse it out thoroughly.
Step 2
Gently squeeze the excess water from your hair and apply a moisturizing conditioner that contains peppermint oil. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, peppermint oil can soothe skin irritations and dryness, and its antibacterial properties can kill some of the bacteria on your skin, which can help treat dandruff. Cosmopolitan also notes this essential oil will stimulate the blood flow and increase your scalp's circulation, as well as soften your strands. Use the pads of your fingers to massage the product into your scalp and through your hair. Let it soak in for 10 minutes, then wash it out.
Step 3
Apply a moisturizing pomade to your scalp, smoothing it in gently to nourish your skin and calm any itching. But do not apply the product closer than 1 inch behind your hairline. The American Academy of Dermatology notes this product might cause your pores to become clogged and lead to a rash-like breakout if it spreads onto your forehead. If this occurs, stop using the pomade and consult your physician.
Step 4
Give your scalp a nightly massage using a gentle brush or the tips of your fingers. This will increase blood flow and help stimulate and unclog your hair follicles. Do this for five minutes before going to bed.
