Calories are found in all types of food and drink. They are the units of energy the body burns off every day. If you do not burn off your daily intake of calories, your body stores the excess as fat.
Recommended Daily Calories
The United Kingdom Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy recommends men consume 2,500 calories every day. The United States Department of Agriculture considers other factors such as the amount of exercise you do, your age, height and weight. So according to the USDA, a 6-foot, 35-year-old male weighing 160. lbs that is physically active for 30 to 60 minutes every day should consume 2,800 calories a day.
Average Daily Calories
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey discovered men, on average, consume 2,475 calories every day. This varied depending on age. Men between the ages of 20 and 60 consumed 2,500 calories a day. This figure dropped by 20 percent for men older than 60; they consumed 2,000 calories a day.
Considerations
To maintain a healthy weight, you must strike a balance between your daily calorie intake and the amount of physical exercise you do. If you want to lose weight, you have to burn off more calories than you consume.
