At Home Relief for Knee Pain

The knees are the largest joints in the human body, and they are pivotal for proper movement patterns. Because they are used so frequently and carry a lot of body weight, they are susceptible to developing pain over the course of time. Arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis and gout are all forms of chronic conditions that can develop. Pain can also stem from an acute injury. You can relieve knee pain at home in several ways.

Rest

When your knee hurts, continuing to place pressure on it can exacerbate the pain and possibly make it worse. Rest your knee for a few days by not walking on it. If you have to get around, walk with the aid of a cane or walking stick.

Cold Therapy

Ice therapy is a common home treatment for acute inflammation and pain that takes place in the knees. Apply an ice pack or ice cubes wrapped in a towel to your knee three times a day for 20-minute intervals. You can use a bag of frozen fruit or vegetables to get the same effect.

Fluid Reduction

Edema is a condition where damaged tissue in your knee fills with fluid. To relieve this, apply an elasticized cloth bandage around your knee. This also keeps your knee stable and holds it in good alignment to promote healing. Make sure the bandage is tight enough to keep your movement restricted, but not so tight that it cuts off your circulation.

Elevation

When you stand or sit and have knee pain, you are in a favorable position for fluid to build up. According to the Mayo Clinic, "Because gravity drains away fluids that might otherwise accumulate after an injury, elevating your knee can help reduce swelling." When you are at home, lie down and place your leg up on a stack of pillows.

Supplements

Glucosamine and chondroitin are found in cartilage naturally. When your knee cartilage is worn away over the years from overuse or osteoarthritis, you can use glucosamine and chondroitin supplements to ease pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, both types of supplements may help relieve the pain of osteoarthritis of the knee. You can find these supplements over the counter at your local pharmacy.

Creams

Wintergreen ointments have hot and cold sensations when you apply them to the skin. You can use these on a sore knee to offer short-term pain relief and a numbing feeling. These are available over the counter.

Medications

Over-the-counter medications can be taken to help reduce pain and inflammation of your knee. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are two examples of these.
