Hair loss is often caused by hormonal changes within the body. Both men and women can experience thinning hair when testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. This androgen binds to hair follicles, causing miniaturization that results in shortened hair cycles. As the hair sheds, its replacement is much thinner and shorter than normal and eventually, the follicle no longer produces hair. Only two topical agents found in shampoos are known to treat this condition. All other active ingredients aren't likely to promote desired results.
Minoxidil
Minoxidil is the most common topical agent found in shampoos that can effectively treat hair loss. While twice-daily use can slow the progression of hair loss and encourage the regrowth of lost hair in both genders, this ingredient is far more effective in women than men, explains the American Hair Loss Association. Unlike other medications known to treat hair loss, the reason that minoxidil works is still unknown. Minoxidil was formerly used to treat hypertension, but one of the side effects of this drug was the excess growth of hair. If used regularly, you should see results in upward of 12 weeks.
Ketoconazole
Ketoconazole is another active ingredient found in shampoos that may help treat thinning hair. But this topical agent is only effective in women. When applied to the scalp each day, ketoconazole has an antiandrogenic effect on the female body, according to the American Hair Loss Association. Reducing the amount of androgens helps to reduce the amount of dihydrotestosterone in the body. Without DHT, the follicle won't miniaturize, and you should retain your existing hair.
Other Shampoos
If a shampoo to treat thinning hair doesn't contain one of these ingredients, it won't likely work. Many commercial shampoos add ingredients that cause tingling along the scalp to make the product feel as if it's working, but it's no more than a sensation. It must have either minoxidil or ketoconazole to treat female pattern baldness or minoxidil to treat male pattern baldness. Talk to your dermatologist to determine which products are best for you. He may recommend a medication other than minoxidil and ketoconazole to treat your hair loss. Follow your doctor's orders for best results.
