Although breastfeeding twins involves a great deal of time, effort and patience, it provides numerous benefits, not only for your babies, but also for your body. Among other advantages that the Nursing Mothers Counsel mentions, breastfeeding twins can significantly aid your effort to lose the baby weight naturally and slowly.
Breastfeeding one baby burns 500 calories a day, states the New York State Department of Health, so nursing two babies naturally doubles that number.
You will only burn around 1,000 calories if you breastfeed exclusively. If you supplement with formula, or if your twins begin eating solid foods in addition to breastmilk, then you will burn fewer calories through breastfeeding. Also, different babies’ needs, hunger levels and growth rates vary, so not every baby will consume exactly 500 calories each day. If one or both of your twins goes through a growth spurt, the number of calories you burn through nursing will increase temporarily.
More Calories Required
Although breastfeeding can help you lose the baby weight, or at least help you avoid gaining weight during the first few tiring months, the Nursing Mothers Counsel warns against using breastfeeding as a strict dieting tool. Your babies need excellent nutrition to grow healthily, and you need plenty of energy to care for your two infants. Accordingly, Nursing Mothers Counsel advises that you consume 3000 calories each day, and possibly extra vitamins. Make sure to choose healthy foods -- including vegetables, whole grains, protein and calcium -- and drink plenty of water.
