Nicotine is an addictive substance found in tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco. It can cause you to experience withdrawal effects when you attempts to quit. Because nicotine is a drug, you may need to go to your doctor to get help to quit smoking. Doctors can prescribe nicotine patches and gum to stop the cravings. You also can help yourself curb nicotine cravings with certain types of foods.

Water

Water helps the body replenish itself and prevents dehydration. Also water tastes good even without extra flavorings. Most people prefer fruit or soda drinks instead of water, but if you drink water, you can help yourself better curb your nicotine cravings.

Fruits

Eating nutritious foods such as fruit will help your body to get and remain healthy. Keeping your body healthy will help prevent the cravings during withdrawal from smoking. Have fresh fruit nearby to snack on during the first stages of your smoking cessation program. Aside from the direct health benefits of eating the fruit, the action of picking up and nibbling on the piece of fruit may help to replace the act of picking up and smoking a cigarette.

Fresh Vegetable Platter

Fresh vegetables can serve the same purposes as fresh fruit. They will help you replace the habit of smoking by using your hands to lift them to your mouth to eat. They also will provide nutrition and keep your mind occupied away from tobacco products. Planning on a virtual platter filled with fresh vegetables will give your hands something to do as well as consuming nutritious vegetables instead of smoking a cigarette. Keep this platter available to help during the times of cravings for nicotine.

Candy

Chocolates and hard candies are good to keep around the house. When you feel like lighting up again, replace this action with unwrapping and eating a hard candy because it is something that simulates the oral aspect of smoking. The taste of hard candy or chocolate may help divert you from the desire to have nicotine.
