Americans hunt for a number of reasons, among them sport and to accumulate trophies. Many also consume their prey. There is a wide array of edible game, each with its own unique nutritional value.

Deer

Deer meat, also known as venison, is among the most popular and healthy choices among commonly hunted animals. A serving of roasted deer tenderloin contains 126.7 calories per 3 oz., with 25.4 g of protein and 2 g of fat. Other parts of a deer are similar in their low calorie count combined with high amounts of protein. A deer's shoulder and loin contains less than 165 calories per 3 oz.

Highest Calorie Levels

There is not one specific type of game that accounts for the most caloric intake. Among common American wildlife, raccoon meat offers more than 1,000 calories per piece of cooked meat from a 1-lb. sample. The American possum is also high on the calorie list, at nearly 900 calories derived from a 1-lb. sample.

Fowl

For the most part, game fowl have more calories than commonly hunted mammals. Quail, ducks and doves all have more than 200 calories per 3.5-oz. servings, and domestic geese have 371 calories per 3.5-oz. serving.
