Overview

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus. According to MotherNature.com, they can be hereditary or a product of diet and toilet habits. Some hemorrhoids require medical treatment for removal when they become extremely painful. With a few diet changes and home remedies, hemorrhoids may disappear. Even if the hemorrhoids do not go away forever, the inflammation can be treated and this will reduce the discomfort. Long-term dietary changes will reduce the chances of inflammation of existing hemorrhoids and the development of new ones.

Step 1

Increase your water and fiber intake to soften your stool. Natural sources of fiber can be found in almonds, spinach, green vegetables and whole grains. Consult your physician before adding a commercial fiber product to your diet. There are several products to choose from and many can offer the relief you need.

Step 2

Run a bath with about two to three inches of warm water. Pour in a generous cup of Epsom salts. Soak in the tub for 20 to 30 minutes. This soaking will not only help cleanse the area but also reduce the swelling. Repeat the bath as often as relief is desired.

Step 3

Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to a cotton swab or your finger. Gently insert it a half inch into the rectum. According to MotherNature.com, this will lubricate the anus and make passing stools easier. An alternative to this is to apply commercial hemorrhoid cream using the applicator included in the package. Use either remedy up to four times daily or after each bowel movement.

Step 4

Dab the hemorrhoid and surrounding area with a tissue or cotton ball dipped in witch hazel or use commercial hemorrhoid wipes. For extended relief put a small amount of witch hazel on a folded tissue. Place it against the hemorrhoid and resume wearing your undergarments. Replace the tissue up to four times daily.

Step 5

Apply an ice pack to the area to reduce swelling and inflammation. Repeat this as often as relief is needed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Hygiene is important when treating a hemorrhoid so be sure to cleanse the area frequently but gently. SIt on a donut or pillow when possible to take pressure off the area. Avoid heavy lifting until the inflammation subsides. Pain reliever medication can also be taken to reduce the pain.
  • These methods are useful in treating hemorrhoids that are not bleeding. Contact your physician if you see blood in your stool as this could be a sign of a serious health concern. Severe hemorrhoids that appear black, called thrombosis, may require immediate medical attention as a blood clot can build up in the veins.
