The kidney is the organ responsible for urine production and waste excretion. The body has two kidneys, which are bean-shaped and fist-sized. They are located at the lower back just below the rib cage. They contain numerous nephrons, which filters the body's blood removing waste products, other substances and excess water. Damage to the nephrons affects the kidneys' functions. A dysfunctional kidney can lead to serious complications around the body and, ultimately, death.
Dandelion
According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, dandelion is one of the supplements that help with kidney function. Dandelion supplements come from fresh or dried dandelion plant parts like leaves, flowers and roots. Fresh dandelion leaves can even be eaten as a salad together with other vegetables. Dandelion was traditionally known as a kidney tonic because of its diuretic properties. Diuretics help cleanse and clean the kidneys by increasing urine output and filtering out waste products from the blood.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is among the supplements that help with kidney function, as described by the Office of Dietary Supplements. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that facilitates absorption of calcium. This vitamin is also known for keeping the bones strong as well as the muscles and skin healthy. Vitamin D helps the kidneys move and filter wastes properly. Vitamin D also maintains the nerves that carry signals from the brain to the kidneys and the other parts of the body.
Phosphorus
According to Medline Plus, phosphorous is one of the supplements that help with kidney function. Phosphorous is a mineral that naturally comes from food sources like meat, milk, cereals, whole-grain breads and dairy products. Phosphorous can also be prepared as a food supplement in the form of pills or tablets. Aside from maintaining bone health, phosphorus also helps with heart contraction, blood circulation, nerve conduction and kidney function.
