Appetite loss is a common symptom of a number of conditions and it can range in severity. A loss of appetite, which may also be referred to as a food aversion or anorexia, involves decreased appetite, hunger or desire to eat. It differs from the eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, in which a person feels actual hunger but restricts his/her intake due to concerns about weight and appearance.
Appetite loss may often be accompanied by feelings of listlessness, fatigue, depression or other physical symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or stomach upset. As always, check with your doctor if you are experiencing any of these symptoms and they are interfering with your life.
Signs and Symptoms
The University of Illinois Medical Center cites that there are additional signs to be aware of when experiencing appetite loss. Notice if appetite loss is sudden or gradual and if it is accompanied by vomiting or nausea that is either constant or intermittent. Determine whether weight-loss has occurred and if appetite loss occurs with all or only some foods. Emotional factors and stresses also must be considered as life changes, traumas or mood can have an impact appetite and hunger.
Acute or Chronic Illnesses
Chronic appetite loss typically occurs in people with a serious underlying disorder such as cancer, AIDS, chronic lung disease, liver cirrhosis, severe kidney disease, heart disease, or liver failure. Also, disorders that affect the brain such as dementia or Alzheimer's disease, which leads to a decrease in brain functions and memory levels, may affect the appetite. It is important to discuss with your doctor any symptoms of headaches, dizziness, weight-loss, nausea, fever or diarrhea.
Medications
Certain medications may cause appetite loss as a side effect. Check with your pharmacist or doctor to determine what common side-effects you may experience from the drugs you take. Drugs, such as lanoxin, PROZAC, quinidine, hydralazine, alcohol, narcotics, antibiotics, chemotherapy medications used for cancer treatments, and a diabetes medication called metformin may affect appetite.
