The Benefits of Rutin

Rutin is a supplement touted for its bioflavonoid (compound found in citrus fruits) properties. The typical uses for ruitin include treating poor blood circulation, hemorrhoids, skin bruising and varicose veins. In addition, rutin has anti-inflammatory effects on the body, has antioxidant benefits and has been evaluated for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, according to Ray Sahelian, M.D. Rutin is available as a supplement or can be consumed in fruits like oranges, lemons, lime, grapefruit and berries. Rutin is also present in buckwheat seeds.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are commonly found in the legs and feet and result in enlarged, contorted veins that can cause pain and aching. According to the Mayo Clinic, these veins can occasionally lead to more serious conditions and may signal a higher risk of additional circulatory problems. Rutin is considered a natural treatment for varicose veins, according to the Physicians Desktop Reference (PDR). Other simple treatment methods for the condition that can be combined with rutin include exercise to encourage blood circulation, weight loss to relieve the pressure of excess weight, diet to prevent swelling caused by water retention and taking care to dress appropriately, as high heels and tight clothing can restrict blood flow and worsen the condition. In serious cases, surgery is needed to correct the veins, though the possibility of the varicose veins recurring exists.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel diseases include conditions like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. These conditions affect the body by causing chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, resulting in diarrhea and abdominal pain. Aside from being a nuisance, these conditions can be dangerous and debilitating, leading to life-threatening complications, according to the Mayo Clinic. No known cures for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease exist, but rutin's anti-inflammatory benefits may provide some relief.

Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen and tender veins in your lower rectum and anus. They are common in pregnancy and can also result from straining to achieve a bowel movement, as is common with constipation. These piles are itchy, painful and can cause bleeding. While hemorrhoids are considered a taboo topic, they are one of the most common ailments, according to the Mayo Clinic. Simple treatments can help relieve this bothersome condition, however. Topical treatments, sitz baths, cold compresses and oral medications like Tylenol and Advil can help relieve the symptoms of hemorrhoids. In addition, rutin is considered a natural treatment for hemorrhoids, and can be used in combination with these methods.
