The word "detox" used to refer mainly to medical procedures that helped clear the body of dangerous poisons, drugs and alcohol, according to Harvard HEALTHbeat. However, infomercial products such as Kinoki "detox" foot pads also claim to help rid the body of elements that are said to cause ill health.
Benefits
The makers of Kinoki foot pads advertise that their products remove toxins, heavy metals, chemicals and metabolic wastes that can cause health problems such as headaches, parasites, fatigue, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes and weakened immunity, according to the US Federal Trade Commission. They also claim that their products can aid in weight loss.
Function
Kinoki foot pads are said to contain natural ingredients such as herbs and bamboo vinegar that help draw out toxins through your feet when you attach the pads overnight. When you remove the foot pads from your feet, they appear dark or discolored to supposedly reflect the impurities that have been drawn from your body through the soles of your feet, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Expert Insight
Kinoki foot pads have been shown to turn the same dark color whether they soak up foot perspiration or are squirted with tap water, according to Harvard HEALTHbeat. Although Kinoki foot pads may not contain ingredients that cause actual harm to the body, they may indirectly cause health problems. For example, an ill consumer may become sicker if he believes that he can use the foot pad rather than seeing a doctor and getting the appropriate medical treatment.
Warning
In 2009, the US Federal Trade Commission charged promoters of Kinoki foot pads with running deceptive advertisements after the claimed effects were found false or unsupported by evidence. In October of 2010, the commission effectively banned marketers of the product from selling the foot pads or any supplement, food, medical device or drug. It also banned marketers from aiding others in promoting or selling such products.
Considerations
Wait until scientific evidence proves a "detox" claim to be accurate before you invest any time and money into a product, recommends the Mayo Clinic website. Bear in mind that the human body is equipped with a natural ability to defend itself from the negative effects of environmental toxins or an occasional night of drinking, according to Harvard HEALTHbeat. Promote your own health by eating a well-balanced diet, drinking plenty of clear fluids, exercising at least 30 minutes most days of the week and seeing your doctor for medical check-ups. Also, visit a doctor if you experience signs of illness such a fatigue, unexplained weight fluctuations and breathing difficulties.
