Bikram yoga, a variety performed in a room heated to 105 degrees, incorporated 90 minutes of poses, or asanas, done in a certain order. This strenuous type of yoga may offer many benefits.
Calories
One hour of Bikram yoga, also referred to as hot yoga, burns 630 calories per hour, according to the Elysium Yoga website. This is the equivalent of jogging for the same period of time, and it burns more calories than any other form of yoga.
Poses
There are 26 yoga poses used during a Bikram class. These poses range from standing poses to sitting poses and include the Half Moon pose, Standing Head to Knee, Balancing Stick, Cobra, the Half Tortoise, Rabbit pose and Spine-Twisting pose. According to the Bikram Yoga website, these poses warm and stretch your muscles, ligaments and tendons in the order in a specific order.
Considerations
Working out in the 105 degree temperatures typical in Bikram yoga may be hazardous to your health. The Vanderbilt University Health Psychology website notes that the heat can put stress on your cardiovascular system and put you at risk of heat stroke.
