Wine is available in many different varieties. It is usually categorized into red or white. Each category is then split into different varieties, based on the grape from which it is made. Red wine includes such varieties as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot. Some white wine varieties are Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc and Riesling.

Red Wine

The United States Department of Agriculture's Nutrient Database lists the calories in a 6-oz serving of red wine as 150. This value changes slightly depending on the grape variety. Pinot Noir has 145 calories per 6-oz serving, while Merlot has 146 calories. Cabernet Sauvignon is listed as having just 2 fewer calories per serving, at 144.

White Wine

The USDA database lists white wine as containing fewer calories than red wine per 6-oz serving. An average glass of white wine has 145 calories. Pinot Blanc and Riesling white wines both contain 142 calories per 6-oz serving. Pinot Grigio has 146 calories.

Considerations

The standard measurement for a glass of wine is 5 ounces, for both red and white wine. Most restaurants and bars will attempt to pour about 5 ounces per glass. This would make the caloric count slightly less than what is listed above.
