Herbs for the Adrenal Gland

The adrenal glands are two small triangular-shaped organs directly above the kidneys. The glands are responsible for the production of the body's main stress hormones including cortisol, adrenaline and norepinepherine. Symptoms of reduced renal function can include lethargy, fatigue and blood sugar disorders. Conditions such as Addison's and Cushing's disease are related to the adrenal glands. Many people choose to explore alternative methods of treating adrenal gland disorders, including the use of herbal supplements. Remember, using herbal supplements should always be discussed with your doctor or a medical professional.

Licorice Root

Low adrenal gland dysfunction is often connected with chronic fatigue syndrome. According to the University of Michigan, licorice root can stimulate the adrenal glands and stop the break down of cortisol in the body. A main component of the herb is glycyrrhizin, which directly affects cortisol deceleration. Though no clinical studies show a direct effect of licorice root on the adrenal gland, The University of Michigan states a patient improved adrenal gland function by taking 2.5 mg of licorice root daily. The university suggests taking the herbal supplement for 6 to 8 weeks to test results. Do not confuse licorice root with the candy, flavored by anise.

Asian Ginseng and Eleuthero

Both Asian ginseng and eleuthero may affect the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in the body, suggests The University of Michigan. The herbs may support the function of the bodies stress system. Though no controlled research has been developed, the university suggests including the herbs after an initial 6-week treatment of licorice root. Recommended dosages include 200 to 500 mg per day of Ginseng and 300 to 400 mg of eleuthero extract. Be aware both herbs are taken for several weeks, followed by a one to two week rest period. Do not take ginseng if you are diagnosed with low blood sugars, high blood pressure or heart conditions.

Valerian Root and Kava Kava

Adrenal gland dysfunction can cause high levels of stress and anxiety. The body is unable to control stress levels. Use a variety of calming herbs to decrease anxiety levels. Valerian root and kava kava are all mentioned in Phyliss Balch's book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" as herbs allow the body to relax and distress. Recommended dosages include 300 to 600 mg up to three times a day of valerian root, 150 to 300 mg up to three times a day of kava kava. Avoid kava kava if you have any type of liver disorder. Both herbs are also used as sleep aids---be cautious if you feel tired or sleepy when taking the supplements.
