Hair perms can cause you to have over-processed hair. The end result is damaged, lifeless hair that lacks shine and bounce. Restoring your hair to health can be as easy as adapting to better hair care practices. While no miracle cure exists to repair damaged hair outright, adapting to a balanced hair care regimen puts your hair on the path to a fresh, new start.

Step 1

Visit your hair stylist for a fresh hair trim every six to eight weeks to prevent split ends. This gives the ends of your hair a healthier look, not only getting rid of split ends, but also protecting the good hair you have left.

Step 2

Wash hair two to three times a week. Damaged hair is dehydrated hair; shampooing it provides it with moisture. Products containing dimethicone, shea butter or nut oil work well on moisturizing dehydrated hair, according to an article in Women's Health Magazine.

Step 3

Deep condition your damaged hair once a week with a deep conditioning protein treatment. Apply conditioner to hair after shampooing it; roll hair up into a bun and lay with a towel over your pillow and sleep with conditioner on your hair overnight.

Step 4

Avoid heat styling whenever possible. This includes curling iron, flat irons, hot rollers and blow dryers. If you must use them be sure to keep them set to low heat to prevent frying your hair.

Step 5

Apply a dab of serum containing silicone to your hair while either damp or dry to smooth out hair cuticle.

Step 6

Stock your beauty supply closet with styling products that contain proteins to fortify the structure of the hair.

Tips and Warnings

  • Refrain from over washing your hair. Aim for no more than three times a week as too much washing can damage hair cuticle. Be mindful of what you eat. Proper diet is as much a part of hair health as it is in providing your body with good nutrition. Take a daily multivitamin and drink at least six to eight glasses of water every day. Invest in the proper comb and brush for your hair type. Avoid vigorous brushing and combing. Brush or comb your hair gently. Avoid buying "miracle hair repair" products that promise to heal damaged hair. No one product can restore your hair to health. Instead, follow a proper, balanced hair care regimen and stick with it.
