Alcoholic drinks are generally high in calories. Knowing how many calories are in the beverages you drink can make calorie counting easier or simply make you more aware of what you are drinking.

Wine

The calories in wine differ depending upon the grape, winery, fermentation process and other variables. However, you can expect anywhere from 80 to 180 calories in a 4-oz. glass of wine. Wines with higher alcohol and sugar contents generally contain more calories.

Wine Variations

On average, red and white wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chianti and red Zinfandel contain about 100 calories per 4-oz. serving. Stronger wines, like ruby port, white port and Tokay contain closer to 180 calories per serving.

Beer

Beer calorie content varies depending upon its sugar and alcohol content. Light beer contains between 50 and 100 calories per 12-oz. serving. Regular beers contain anywhere from 100 to 200 calories per 12-oz. serving.

Spirits and Liqueur

Spirits, or hard alcohol, are high in calories. A 1.5-oz. serving of gin, vodka or whiskey contains 90 to 125 calories, depending upon the proof. A higher proof yields more calories. Liqueur calorie content is even higher and can be 60 to 200 calories per 1.5-oz. serving.
