Nail the Perfect Fall Polish

When fall rolls around, gone are the bright and airy manicures of summer that somehow just don't seem appropriate when the leaves start to fall and you bring out your autumn jackets. But finding the perfect fall nail color doesn't need to be hard. A quick look at the fall trends in clothes can give you a good idea of what looks good on nails. You don't have to nix the manicure altogether once summer is gone, just tone it down from the beach-inspired brights that you've been sporting. Fall colors are more sophisticated and polished.

Step 1

Choose darker, jewel-inspired colors to match your deeper clothing. While your clothing and nail polish should never match exactly, Glamour magazine says that picking a deep berry nail polish while you wear blacks, grays and greens can brighten up your look. While black was popular in the past, berry, dark green and navy blue are much more appropriate and less adolescent. When doing dark nails, remember to trim them short to lessen the Halloween effect.

Step 2

Ask your manicurist to give you a change from your usual French manicure. Instead of doing white tips, choose a more luxe and polished look by going with gold and silver. They look just as professional as French tips, but add a little more personality, brightening up your fall looks.

Step 3

Notice the latest look in nail polish: matte nails. While usually nails are polished to a high shine, nail polish manufacturers are rolling out their matte polishes, which tone down bright colors to make them more appropriate for fall, as well as more user-friendly. You can buy matte nail polish, or simply buff your shiny nail polish to remove the sheen for a fall fashion-forward look.

Step 4

Ask your manicurist for a menswear-inspired look. With the arrival of fall comes the arrival of tweeds, plaids and argyles. A good manicurist can re-create patterns on your nails for an interesting look. Go girly with bright colors, or choose darker colors for an individual but still workplace-appropriate fall nail.

Step 5

Don't be afraid to go with naked nails. You've probably had your nails painted brightly all summer long. The fall brings a more subdued look, perfect for well-groomed and neat nails. Add a topcoat if you want the nails to look manicured, even without polish.
