Most teenagers' bodies are still changing, growing and developing, making proper nutrition essential for teens. The amount of calories required for a teen's daily activities depend on age, sex and level of activity.

Female Needs

An average teenage girl needs between 1,800 and 2,400 calories each day, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Teenage girls ages 11 to 13 need 1,600 to 2,200 calories per day, while females ages 14 to 18 require 1,800 to 2,400 calories a day.

Male Needs

Teenage boys require 1,800 to 3,200 calories each day depending on their age. Males between the ages of 11 and 13 need 1,800 to 2,600 calories; those ages 14 to 18 need 2,200 to 3,200 calories per day, according to the Kids Eat Right website.

Activity Level

The amount of calories a teen needs each day also depends on how active he is. The more a teen exercises, the more calories he needs. Moderately active teenage girls need 1,600 to 2,000 calories a day, according to the USDA. Teenage males that exercise at a moderate level need 1,800 to 2,800 calories per day.

Nutrition

Proper nutrition is just as important as the amount of calories a teen consumes each day. To maintain a healthy weight and get all the nutrients and vitamins your body needs, eat plenty of fresh produce, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean protein.
