Two Chinese words compose the word "qigong," according to the National Qigong Association. The first part is "qi," which means energy or life force that permeates every living thing. The second part, "gong," mean accomplishment that is derived from regular practice. Together, the words form the practice of qigong that practitioners use to achieve maximum energy and well being, including optimal weight.

Basics

Practitioners view qigong as a martial art and a spiritual-based practice of healing art. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine explains that the practice revolves around breathing techniques, physical movement and mental focus. Other modalities such as tai chi and king fu often incorporate qigong techniques in their practices.

Efficacy

With regular physical activity and a more focused approach to eating and feeding the body, coupled with relaxation techniques that reduce stressful eating habits, qigong is an effective tool to use in a weight loss regimen. Research by the Arizona State University College of Nursing and Healthcare Innovation supports the use of qigong for bone health, balance and cardiovascular health, all of which can help you remain more active and maintain a healthy weight. Additionally, qigong restores practitioners' confidence in their abilities to lose weight and perform any number of exercises.

Benefits

The National Qigong Association reports that practicing qigong enhances the immune system while building stamina to exercise for longer periods of time. Stamina and vitality increase while other bodily functions also may improve. In addition to increased cardiovascular function, respiratory, digestive, circulatory and lymphatic systems may function better, leading to a healthier body weight.

Considerations

The most successful weight loss program is one that you can stick with and that you enjoy. You must like the foods you eat and look forward to your regular exercise routines to make them an integral part of your lifestyle. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, qigong is an attractive alternative to many other forms of exercise that may be too taxing or uncomfortable. The easy, relaxed movements involved in the practice are manageable for the elderly and people of all physical abilities.

Features

Every aspect of qigong supports an integrated approach to health and weight loss. When the mind is positive and stress-free, the body responds more readily to direction, according to the National Qigong Association. You can practice qigong on a variety of levels ranging from basic beginner moves to more intricate activities that could challenge an elite athlete. Children and seniors can practice qigong and you don't need any special clothing or equipment.
