Nutritional Facts for Eliminating Urinary Tract Infections

When bacteria enter the urinary tract, a urinary tract infection can occur. Although the condition is most common in women, men can also experience an irritating urinary tract infection. Fortunately, a few nutritional changes can help eliminate or treat infections.

Beverages

The Mayo Clinic recommends drinking plenty of water and unsweetened cranberry juice to help flush bacteria out of the urinary tract. However, sweetened fruit juices, alcohol, caffeinated coffee and soft drinks are not recommended.

Cranberries & Blueberries

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, "cranberries and blueberries contain substances that inhibit the binding of bacteria to bladder tissue." Eating these fruits and drinking their unsweetened juices can prevent the progression of a urinary tract infection.

Foods to Eat

Take advantage of antioxidant-rich foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables. The antioxidants should help eliminate bacteria from the urinary tract. Also, add plenty of high-fiber foods to the diet, including oats, beans and whole grains.

Foods to Avoid

Refined foods, such as white breads, sugary desserts and pasta, should be avoided while treating a urinary tract infection. Additionally, avoid red meats and fatty foods.
