An itchy scalp can be common but frustrating. There are many reasons for an itchy scalp, as well as treatments. If you are concerned, contact a doctor who can determine the correct course of treatment for your suddenly itchy scalp. A healthy scalp is important for healthy hair, and there are ways to alleviate the itching and restore your scalp's natural surface.

Types

A suddenly itchy scalp can be caused by a few scalp conditions. A dry scalp will cause it to itch and may seem as though it comes on suddenly. It also creates flakes of dead skin but should not be confused with dandruff. Dandruff results in oily, white flakes of dead skin and is also itchy. Both dry scalp and dandruff irritate the scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory condition of the skin and scalp. It causes itching, flaking and redness. Scalp psoriasis is also an inflammatory condition that causes itching, flaking and redness but also plaques and scales. Each condition can progress gradually, but the itch and flaking may seem to come on suddenly.

Risk Factors

Itching is typically a sign of dryness, and a dry scalp can occur due to cold, arid environments. Winter weather and dry climates cause humidity levels to fall, resulting in excessive dryness, according to the Mayo Clinic. Air conditioning, as well as central heating, dries out the air and lowers humidity levels. A dry, itchy scalp can occur from hot showers and frequent shampooing. Hair appliances such as hair dryers can also dry your scalp. An autoimmune disorder is thought to be a cause of scalp psoriasis, and skin infections can result in dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis.

Treatment

Depending on what has caused your suddenly itchy scalp, there are a variety of treatments to alleviate the problem. Anti-dandruff shampoos that contain selenium sulfide or ketoconazole are effective for relieving the itching and flaking associated with dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. A dry scalp can benefit from deep conditioners or natural or organic shampoos. A common treatment for scalp psoriasis is salicylic acid or coal tar shampoos.

Significance

Selenium sulfide and ketoconazole work at treating dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis by getting rid of the underlying infection while helping to soothe your scalp. Shampoos that contain coal tar slow the rapid production of skin cells, a characteristic that is found with scalp psoriasis. It reduces inflammation and itching while restoring your scalp. Salicylic acid causes the outer layer of skin to shed treating the overproduction of skin cells helping scalp psoriasis.

Considerations

Nutrition can help keep your scalp healthy. Drinking plenty of water will help keep your scalp hydrated to prevent any sudden itchiness. Other treatments for an itchy scalp include hot oil treatments and deep conditioners.
