Nutrition in Avocados

Avocados are cholesterol- and sodium-free fruits that are a perfect addition to a healthy balanced diet. Avocados contain monounsaturated fat, which lowers total blood cholesterol levels, and are a good source of almost 20 minerals, vitamins and nutrients.

Serving Size

One cup of cubed avocado has 240 calories. The 22 grams of fat contained in a serving is mostly unsaturated, with only 3 grams being saturated fat.

Lutein

One ounce of avocado contains 81mcg of lutein. The American Cancer Society states that preliminary studies suggest lutein may be helpful in keeping eyesight healthy as the body ages.

Folate

A one-cup serving of avocado has 23 percent of the daily recommended allowance of folate. Studies cited by the California Avocado Commission show that those who eat a high-folate diet have less risk of heart disease or stroke than those who do not.

Potassium

Potassium is a necessary mineral that the body uses to regulate blood pressure. One serving of avocado contains 21 percent of the daily recommended allowance of potassium.

Nutrients

Avocados also contain vitamins E and C, fiber, iron, protein and beta-carotene. They also contain phytonutrients, which are considered to be vital elements of good nutrition by the American Cancer Society.

Nutrient Booster

Avocados enable the body to absorb more fat-soluble nutrients called carotenoids. Carotenoids are often found in vegetables, so adding avocado to a salad will help the body absorb nutrients from the vegetables.
