Many dieters on low-carbohydrate diets count net carbohydrates, which is the total number of carbohydrates in a food after fiber and sugar alcohols are deducted. These carbohydrates are sometimes not counted by low-carbohydrate dieters because their impact on the blood glucose levels is less dramatic than those of dietary sugar. A variety of zero net carbohydrate foods are available for you to include in your meals and snacks.
Meat
Most meats have zero carbohydrates. When choosing meats, look for those that are prepared without hidden carbohydrates, such as glazes, fillers, breading and marinades. Honey-glazed ham and meatballs are examples of meats with carbohydrate-laden glazes and fillers.
Poultry
Nearly all poultry has zero net carbohydrates. As with choosing meat, it is important to avoid poultry items that have hidden carbohydrates in glazes or sauces, such as barbecued chicken or honey-glazed turkey.
Cheese
Many cheeses have zero net carbohydrates. Cheese nutrition varies slightly by manufacturer, so read nutrition labels to ensure that you are choosing a zero net carbohydrate option. Cheddar and mozzarella cheeses commonly have net zero carbohydrates.
Sugar-Free Gelatin
Sugar-free gelatin has zero carbohydrates. Sugar-free gelatin can be made at home with a mix or purchased in ready-to-eat containers.
