Exercising aerobically for 2.5 hours per week and performing strength training at least two days per week are essential to good health, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An almost bewildering array of exercise videos is available to help you achieve your exercise goals. Choose programs that interest you and look fun to stay motivated.

Types

Many types of exercises are available on video and they will all help you get fit. Make your choice based on personal preference. A wide variety of Pilates videos will lead you through workouts with or without equipment. Aerobics videos raise your heart rate for a set amount of time and include activities such as dancing and walking. Some aerobics videos include toning segments for strength training, such as boot camp-style workouts. Kickboxing videos are high-intensity workouts and yoga videos are available in high and low intensity.

Equipment

Some workout videos require equipment to do the exercises effectively. Workout programs that use light weights, such as dumbbells, are popular. Some videos are based on using kettlebells, which are round weights with a handle. Rings, bands and balls are all used with Pilates. Mats are recommended for yoga workouts. Check a video closely to see if you need equipment before purchasing. Don't forget to think about space requirements for using and storing equipment.

Levels

Most workout videos are targeted toward a particular fitness level, such as beginner, intermediate and advanced. Check to make sure you are using a video for your level. Attempting advanced dance steps, for example, when you're just starting out can be discouraging. If you've been leading a fairly sedentary lifestyle, an advanced yoga or kickboxing workout could cause injury. Some workout videos are tailored to pregnant women or are programs with a specific goal in mind, such as getting fit for a wedding.

Strategy

While you can stick to one type of exercise, varying your routine can keep your interest up. Try Pilates one day, and a boot camp video the next. Before you invest in a lot of new workout videos, see if your local library has any to borrow. Free workout videos are also available online and through some cable television channels. The American Council on Exercise recommends using videos taught by certified fitness professionals and avoiding celebrity videos.

Benefits

Workout videos are ideal if you can't get to a gym or need privacy when you exercise. You can choose when to start your workout without regard to a traditional class schedule. The health benefits of exercising go beyond weight loss. MayoClinic.com points out that exercise elevates mood and energy levels and can help prevent type 2 diabetes and some cancers.
