Calories are usually measured by the number you burn doing a specific activity for an hour, but not everyone exercises for an hour. The American College of Sports Medicine points out that small chunks of exercise, 10 or 15 minutes, are also good for you if you don't have the time or endurance to work out in long stretches. In those instances, it may be helpful to know how many calories you burn per minute to assess the amount of calories you burn versus the amount you take in.

Step 1

Weigh yourself first thing in the morning, without your clothes on. Do so before you eat breakfast and after you use the bathroom.

Step 2

Enter your weight in the PeaceHealth Lower Columbia Region Calories Burned Per Hour calculator. Choose the exercise you performed from the drop-down menu and click "calculate" to get the calories you burn per hour. The more strenuous the exercise is, the more calories it burns.

Step 3

Divide the number of calories you burn per hour by the number of minutes in an hour, or 60. For example, a 200-pound person burns 620 calories per hour doing aerobics. Divide this by 60 and you get 10.33 calories per minute.

Step 4

Multiply the number of calories you burn per minute by the number of minutes you exercised to get an estimate of your total calorie expenditure. Using the example above, if you worked out for 10 minutes, you would burn 103.3 calories doing aerobics.

Step 5

Glance at MayoClinic.com's "Exercise for Weight Loss: Calories Burned in 1 Hour" or the American Heart Association's "Physical Activity Calorie Use Chart" to get a rough idea, based on different weights, how many calories you burn per hour doing common exercises. Divide that number by 60 as well to get a rough idea of your calories per minute.

Tips and Warnings

  • Remember, it takes a 3,500-calorie deficit to lose one pound. Aim to exercise at least 150 minutes per week, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
