Exercises balls need to be inflated to the correct size to be used properly. Measuring them to be sure they are the right size is the only way to be sure they are the size they were intended to be. Most exercise balls you see are between 45cm and 65cm, but they are sold in sizes from 45cm to 85cm. Your height and the length of your legs will determine the size of ball you need.

If you plan to use an exercise ball as a replacement for an office chair, consider getting a larger size. You can even get a stand for the ball with wheels to make it more functional as a chair.

Step 1

Use the foot or hand pump that came with your exercise ball to inflate the ball.

Step 2

Stop when the ball is hard like a soccer ball. This may take a while.

Step 3

Hold one end of the measuring tape in place and wrap the other end around the ball. Make sure that the tape is flat on the ball and is in the center all the way around.

Step 4

Look at the measurement in centimeters. Put in more air if the ball is smaller than the size on the box indicates that it should be. Let air out if the ball is too large. The circumference of the ball, fully inflated, is the size of the ball.

Step 5

Measure the ball again and repeat Step 4 until it is the correct size.

Tips and Warnings

  • A general guide to choosing a ball size is that anyone below 5 feet tall should buy a 45cm ball. People up to 5 feet 5 inches and at least 5 feet tall should buy a 55cm ball. From 5 feet 6 inches to 6 feet 1 inch are best off with a 65cm ball. Balls at 75cm large are made for people between 6 feet 2 inches and 6 feet 8 inches. Anyone taller will likely have to order am 85 cm ball. You can buy exercise balls online and at sporting goods stores. Discount retailers, like Target and Marshall's, will often have exercise balls for sale too, but may not carry 45cm, 75cm and 85cm sizes.
  • Just because you fit into the height suggested on the box and your exercise ball measures exactly the size it should be still does not mean it is the best size for you. Someone with longer legs may need a size larger than recommended. To test the height of the ball sit on it as you would a chair. If your knees are approximately the same height as your hips, you probably have the right size.
