Easy Way to Calculate BMI

More than 300,000 people lose their life each year because of weight issues. Obtaining your body mass index (BMI) and comparing the results to the recommendations set forth by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the best way to understand if your weight is at a normal level. According to the NIH, a healthy body mass index is between 18.5 and 24.9. Some experts agree that a body mass index greater than 30 is often unhealthy. The best way to lower your BMI to a normal level is by moderating your caloric intake and exercising regularly.

Step 1

Weigh yourself to get your weight in pounds.

Step 2

Measure your height in inches.

Step 3

Multiply your weight in pounds by 705.

Step 4

Divide the result obtained in Step 3 by your height (in inches).

Step 5

Divide the number from Step 4 by your height (in inches) again. The amount that the equation equals is your current body mass index, or BMI.

Tips and Warnings

  • Figure your BMI frequently; the amount will change with weight loss.
  • Results may be inaccurate according to your body type. Those with large muscles, such as bodybuilders, will have a higher BMI although they are considered healthy.
