Flakes are often associated with dandruff, which is the result of an overproduction of bacteria on the scalp or infrequent washing. However, a dry scalp may also be the cause of flakes. Those who experience a dry scalp may also notice itching that is not readily relieved by scratching. While drying hair products and weather may cause a dry scalp, applying oil may provide temporary relief for this affliction.
Hair Products
Hair products often contain ingredients that can dry your scalp. Many shampoos, hairsprays, gels and other styling products contain alcohol and sulfates, which significantly reduce the amount of moisture in your hair. Excessive washing may also lead to a dry scalp. The Mayo Clinic also notes that dandruff shampoos that contain salicylic acid may also further contribute to dry scalp. To combat dry scalp as a result of harsh products, purchase products that do not contain alcohol and sulfates. Consequently, organic or natural products are good alternatives to standard hair products.
Weather
Extremely cold or hot weather may cause dry scalp, as the air is extremely dry and without moisture. Avoid washing your hair in extremely warm water, as it can cause further skin dehydration. If the air inside of your home seems dry, use a humidifier to add moisture. If possible, avoid using a central heating or air-conditioning system in the home as well, since this may disrupt the amount of moisture in the air.
Oil Treatment
Applying oil to your scalp may temporarily relieve a dry scalp, especially if climate is the culprit. Extra virgin olive oil is an ideal option, because it has moisturizing properties and no harsh chemicals. Part your hair in sections to expose the scalp. Apply the oil to your scalp with your fingers, massaging it into the parts that are exposed. Spread the oil over your entire scalp, but use it sparingly and keep it on your scalp, not your hair. There is no need to rinse the oil from your scalp until you next wash your hair.
Hot Oil Treatment
Hot oil treatments can also be effective against dry scalp. Use natural oils, such as jojoba or olive. Heat the oil and generously massage it into your hair, focusing on the scalp. Cover your scalp with a plastic cap and allow the oil to sit for at least 10 minutes before rinsing it out. If you have coarse hair, allow the oil to sit on your hair for 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing.
Considerations
Consult your dermatologist to be sure that your flakes are a result of dry scalp and not a condition that requires a medicated shampoo. If you do use a dandruff-treating shampoo, use a product that includes tea tree oil, a natural ingredient that may be effective against the condition.
