The gall bladder is a storage organ for bile. Stones can form inside the gall bladder. Once these stones are formed, they can cause pain attacks. Fatty and sweetened food products should be avoided. High fiber diet is beneficial in this condition because it prevents contraction of the gall bladder, thus decreasing painful episodes.

Vegetables

Vegetables are helpful in preventing gall stone attacks due to high fiber content and minimal fats. Vegetables that are beneficial include beets, cucumbers, dandelion greens, beet greens, celery, carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes and ripe tomatoes.

Fruits

Apple and lemon juices can be consumed. All other types of fruit juices should be avoided due to high carbohydrate content. Other fruits that can be eaten include papaya, pears, apricots, grapes, apples, avocados, berries, casaba melons, guavas and prunes.

Meat

Processed fatty meats should be avoided, but fish and skinless chicken can be safely used.

Dairy Products

Dairy products are generally avoided, but processed food products that are free of fat can be eaten. These include skim milk, fat free yogurt and cheese and fat free ice cream.

Gall Stone Dissolution Therapy

Medications have been used in rare instances to help to dissolve gall stones. These medications are used only when patients cannot have surgery. Also, these medications can be used for cholesterol type of gall stones. Stones commonly recur in patients treated non surgically.
