Comfort and flexibility are the keys to finding the right swimwear for water aerobics. Any swimwear that works well for swimming will most likely be fine for water aerobics, too, but make sure your swimwear is comfortable through a wide range of motion. If you exercise outdoors or want some extra gear, there are other products to consider.

Considerations

Water aerobics provide a good cardio workout without the strain on feet and joints that an exercise such as running will cause. In fact, FamilyDoctor.org recommends gentle water aerobics for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, which can cause swelling and pain in the joints. Water aerobics classes are popular in many areas and senior citizens are often attracted to the workouts, but you can also get an aerobic workout by simply walking or jogging in water on your own.

Sun Protection

If you do your exercising outdoors, you need protection from the sun. Slathering on sunscreen is one way to protect your skin, but there are clothing alternatives, too. Many manufacturers sell shirts that are designed to be worn in the water and offer protection from the sun's rays. Look for products with names such as swim tee, surf tee, rashguard or SPF clothing. There are shirts designed for men and women, and they come in short-sleeve and long-sleeve styles.

Water Temperature

What you wear will depend in part on the temperature of the water where you do your aerobics. For outdoor workouts in cooler temperatures, you may want more than a swimsuit. However, if you're working out in a heated pool, swim trunks will probably be enough. MayoClinic.com reports there's no standard guideline for the ideal pool temperature, but it notes that the Arthritis Foundation finds temperatures between 83 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit to be about right for exercise.

Specialty Gear

If you want some protection for your feet while you're in and out of the water, look for a pair of water aerobic shoes. They're designed to dry off quickly once your workout is over. If water temperature is a concern, look for shorty SCUBA suits to add warmth. There's even a zero gravity suit on the market that's designed specifically for activities such as deep water running. Add to your workout with belts, wrist and ankle resistance cuffs and barbells for use in the water.

Benefits

There are many benefits to water aerobics. For some people, taking a class provides a valuable social outlet in addition to helping them tone muscles and burn calories. MayoClinic.com reports that a 200-lb. person who does water aerobics for an hour will burn 364 calories. You can burn more during a high-impact workout on land, but for people who don't like to sweat or can't take the stress on their joints, water aerobics are a good alternative.
