Frizzy hair typically occurs when your hair doesn't have enough moisture. Instead of the hair shaft being lined with smooth cuticles, they are parched and loose, allowing moisture to seep in and give your hair a frizzy and unkempt appearance. While various hot oil treatments and conditioners can help get you smoother-looking hair, you can also raid your fridge and cupboard for ingredients to smooth out your hair at home. With a homemade frizzy hair remedy, you save money and know exactly what ingredients are being used on your hair.
Step 1
Peel, core and mash a ripe avocado. Pour in one small jar of mayonnaise, and mix until you acquire a minty green color and a smooth texture, according to Planet Green. Apply the mixture to your hair, combing through so that every strand has been coated.
Step 2
Wrap your head in plastic wrap or put on a shower cap. Then turn on the shower and sit while the steam and heat help the mayonnaise and avocado penetrate your dry, frizzy hair. Leave the mask on for at least 30 minutes and then remove your shower cap or plastic wrap.
Step 3
Wash your hair to clean off any oily residue. Typically with dry, frizzy hair, you should limit the amount of times you wash per week, notes Medline Plus -- once or twice per week is recommended. Shampoos contain chemical detergents that can often dry out your hair and exacerbate your condition. Choose a shampoo specifically labeled as "moisturizing" or "sulfate free" for the gentlest approach.
Step 4
Allow your hair to air dry. Elizabeth Hartley, West Coast creative director for Vidal Sassoon, tells MotherNature.com the more you handle your hair, the rougher the cuticles become, resulting in a frizzier texture. Heated styling tools like hair dryers and flat irons can dehydrate and even burn hair, leaving it looking broken and messy. If you must dry your hair, pat it with a towel, never squeezing or rubbing -- and allow your hair to dry most of the way before you use a hair dryer for styling.
Step 5
Carry a small bottle of hand lotion with you. When your hair begins to feel dry again, apply moisturizer to your hands and rub in -- and then run your hands through your hair. This helps weight the hair down and moisturize the strands so they lay flatter and reflect light more efficiently. It acts as a mid-day "pick me up" in case your hair begins to frizz even after your hair mask application.
