You spent too much time in the sun, and now your face is showing signs of damage. DermNet NZ states that swelling and red skin characterizes sunburn, which results from overexposure to UV rays. This damage will fade over time, but there are steps you can take to help lessen the discomfort and irritation, as well as prevent more serious damage from occurring. Apply certain lotions every day to moisturize and repair your skin and lips.

Aloe Vera

Lotions infused with an anti-inflammatory ingredient like aloe vera can help lessen the side effects of sunburn, says Ellen Marmur, M.D., the chief of dermatologic surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. As your skin heals, it will most likely begin to peel and flake, so keeping it moisturized is paramount for preventing scarring and permanent damage. According to Holistic Online, aloe vera will help repair your skin's tissues and promote faster healing. It also acts as an emollient and will relieve dryness and calm your skin, as well as hydrate and soften it. Aloe vera is generally safe to ingest and can be applied to both the lips and face.

Hydrocortisone

If you experience itching and pain with your sunburn, dermatologist Jeanine Downie, M.D., recommends that you use a lotion that contains hydrocortisone. This is a topical steroid that DermNet NZ states is an effective anti-inflammatory agent. Hydrocortisone is a mild steroid, but it can have side effects when used incorrectly, such as increasing your susceptibility to infections and causing a thinning of your skin. However, applied correctly, it is an effective method for treating sunburn. DermNet NZ recommends using the hydrocortisone cream twice a day for no more than three days. Consult a physician before you use it for a longer amount of time, or before you apply it to your lips.

Retinol

Exposure to sunlight can cause damage to your skin's collagen, which may lead to sagging and premature signs of aging. Once your sunburn has healed, dermatologist Doris Day, M.D., recommends applying an over-the-counter retinol cream to undo the sun damage on your face. This product is a derivative of vitamin A, and it promotes the new development of collagen. AcneNet states that it also refines your skin's texture to lessen wrinkles, pimples and pigmentation issues. However, this product also increases your skin's sensitivity to the sun, so daily application of sunscreen is essential for preventing future burns. Consult your doctor if you experience excessive skin dryness or flaking while using this product, and do not apply it to your lips.
